A Sitemap.xml file is used to help search engines find pages they may not find normally by crawling your
website. The XML Sitemap is a list of all of the pages on your website.
XML Sitemaps age good for:
Dynamically Generated Pages
Flash Based Websites
New Websites
Large Websites which go many levels deep or having a poor link structure. This makes it difficult for
Google and other search engines to find the pages.
There are also other things you can do with a sitemap.xml file such as:
Let the search engines know the last date each page was modified.
How often the pages are updated i.e daily, weekly, monthly
The importance of certain pages of your website (this doesn't have any effect on your ranking)
